Hg2 : The Hedonist

In comparison to other steakhouse restaurants in Cape Town, Headquarters definitely stands out: wandering through its slightly surreal tunnel-like entrance, lit with paper-and-wire animal sculptures, you arrive in a space with charcoal-hued walls, exposed brick-and-ceiling ducts and all-embracing leather sofas that make it feel almost like a nightclub. Which is a good thing, because Cape Town’s hot-to-trot turn up here in their droves (especially on Wednesday and Friday nights), working the bar before and after their meals. This is the ultimate place for carnivores who struggle to make up their minds, with ‘choice’ limited to free-range sirloin steak (sirloin, apparently, being the most underrated cut of meat, preferred by genuine connoisseurs, and always the most consistent cut), sourced from Namibia and aged for 35 days. The meat is like butter, very tender, and accompanied by chips and a salad. Since you don’t need to look at the menu, you can spend time soaking up the atmosphere and appreciating the design of one of the most exciting looking spaces in Heritage Square, a quintessential part of the steady revitalisation of downtown Cape Town.
