Hg2 : The Hedonist

Hotel Altstadt

Tucked away on a cobbled street, just yards from the imposing rnGrossmünster, Hotel Altstadt is one of the nicest hotels in Zürich’s Old Town. Owner Liz Reichenbach collaborated with artist H.C. Jenssen during a 2010 refurbishment, commissioning one-of-a kind artworks that depict handwritten texts by famous poets for each room.

The rooms are named after the relevant poet and have their collected works on hand for guests with a scholarly bent. There is quite a disparity between the rooms; some are quirky with individual touches, like room 15 with its antique bed head and old theatre seats, and others have a more traditional design hotel aesthetic with wooden floors, grey and cream colour schemes, attractive lighting and the occasional flash of whimsy. The more modern rooms also have excellent bathrooms: dark mosaic tiles with gleaming white fittings. Those in the know book room 52; located in the attic it has a charming roof terrace with lake views.
