Hotel Des Arts
Hotel des Arts is clean, crisp and situated in an ideal location; one of those budget hotels in San Francisco that is boutique, hip, and favourably predisposed to green policies and practices. The real appeal here, however, is the dramatic art. All of the suites and some of the other rooms have been given over to emerging artists to paint and re-create, floor to ceiling, and the results are jaw-droppingly fabulous. Certainly that would be enough to recommend this ultramodern hotel in a sly Victorian-era building, but there is much more. The lovely French brasserie Le Central is located downstairs. Chinatown, Union Square, and the Financial District are all within a couple of blocks. In the European tradition, the basic rooms have shared baths, all of which have original Victorian claw-foot tubs. All the rooms have sinks, and many have small refrigerators and microwaves. The lively, diverse clientele ranges from hipster students to savvy business visitors and young European families on holiday. One suspects, and earnestly hopes, that this is the future for urban hotels.
