Hotel Franziskaner
Sister hotel to the Altstadt, this Niederdorf charmer dates back to the 13th century. Each of the five floors has a theme inspired by the natural world, from herbs to flowers, elements, music and planets. Each room is unique and idiosyncratic, no cookie cutter minimalist dark wood here but an interesting blend of colour, texture and furniture. The clue is in the room name, so Muskat (nutmeg) is browns, pale orange and cream, Minze (mint) is dark and masculine, Sage, a study in grey and silver, Gladiolen (gladioli) a burst of scarlet and bright blue. You get the picture.
Try and bag one of the two top floor rooms, Mars and Jupiter, which come with large rooftop terraces decked out with a table and chairs, sun loungers, pots of lavender and awesome views of Zürich’s skyline. Very much a labour of love for owner and manager, Liz Reichenbach took over the hotel in 1984 and has gradually redecorated all the rooms giving it a homely feel that sets it apart from the proliferation of small hotels in the area.
