Hotel Spadari

Open since 1991, the Spadari claims the crown as the city’s first design hotel, but more recently it has segued into the direction of Milan’s art hotels and pays Saatchi-like homage to emerging young artists. On a par subjectively but minus the sensation, the Spadari’s collection of modern art, commissioned and curated by Palazzo Reale’s artistic director, adorns its 40 well-sized rooms, small lobby and breakfast room, alongside contemporary European furniture. Pale carved wood by respected Italian artist Ugo La Pietra and a pale blue colour scheme (both apparently relaxing in chromatherapy terms) are used throughout the hotel. And with free bedtime storybooks laid out like goodnight chocolates, plus concertedly friendly service, the low-key, family-run Spadari is unusual for creating calm right on the doorstep of the Duomo.
