Ice Skating

Several outdoor skating rinks appear each winter in the city, but there are also year-round places to skate indoors. However, if it gets cold enough the waters around Stockholm will freeze. Skating lanes and even coffee stands appear on the ice. Suddenly you can take short cuts between islands by walking across the frozen water. In a good, cold winter, it’s possible to take skating trips around the archipelago or head inland on Lake Mälaren.

Each year (weather allowing) there is a famous skating race, the Vikingarännet, which covers 80 kilometres (50 miles) between Stockholm and Uppsala. It usually takes place in February. It attracts around 4,000 participants.  You can learn more and sign up for the race at the website: www.vikingarannet.com
