Il Pagliaccio isn’t one of the restaurants in Rome where you’ll find ossobuco alla romana or bucatini all’amatriciana, but you will find delicate flavours and interesting departures from the classical Roman menu, while acclaimed pastry chef Marion Lichtle rounds off the meal with choice desserts. Whereas some creative cuisine can be rather challenging, Genovese’s offerings are still accessible even to the non-gourmet palate. However, prohibitive prices have made this a haunt for businessmen and culinary connoisseurs, creating rather rarefied atmosphere that complements the white tablecloths and plush baroque upholstery. Some of the comments on the menu (‘Tradition out of my heart tasting menu’) may seem a little sentimental to the cynic’s eye but all is forgiven on account of the excellent service (with impeccable English) and impressive food.
