There are about five Indian restaurants in Beirut but India stands out for the strength of its food and its atmosphere. The dark and colonial décor is supposed to evoke the feeling of ancient India, but although it’s slightly off-target it has nevertheless created a comfortable downtown experience where guests lounge at tables or perch, cocktail in hand, at the bar. rn

The men behind it – Serge Chehab, Raji Varma and Anthony Baladi – really understand the essence of Punjabi cuisine, preparing delicately spiced curries for any taste. There’s a good selection of grilled or curried vegetarian dishes as well as delicious lamb and seafood dishes, and undoubtedly the best biriani and popadoms you’ll find in the Middle East.
