Inn at the Presidio
One for historically-minded travellers, the Inn at the Presidio is a lovingly-restored Georgian Revival-style, red-brick building from 1903, once home to the bachelors of the US army; the Presidio being, of course, the former military base in the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Today, the Inn at the Presidio is the only hotel in the historic park. This tranquil 22-room boutique hotel, surrounded by leafy Eucalyptus trees and the odd swaying palm, is the kind of place you could imagine sitting in a rocking chair on the front porch as the sun sets. Oh, wait – it’s exactly that kind of place. There’s even a fire pit out back. Inside, meanwhile, the decor is an exercise in understated elegance, with an almost coastal colour scheme and just enough military regalia to remind you of the hotel’s heritage (it is, after all, a registered landmark). Rooms and suites come with Heavenly Enchanted EuroTop beds by Restonic, bath products by EO, and flat screens as standard. And while the main house (originally and creatively named Building 42) is luxurious, for extra privacy and novelty, look to the four-bedroomed, art-bedecked Funston House; ideal for accommodating the whole family, or a small entourage.
