Ishin
Ishin has all the charm of an empty supermarket in a Tokyo suburb but is one of Berlin’s great cafés despite the cold, cafeteria-style room with tiled floors and spartan Japanese decorations. But don’t let its atmosphere fool you: for a great sushi lunch just off of bustling Friedrichstrasse, Ishin is the place to go. Although occasionally uneven, the quality of the fish is generally very good – especially the daily specials. The tuna and salmon are always firm and fresh, although the watery miso soup can be missed. Free green tea is a real treat, and the speedy staff do their best to fulfil everyone’s wishes. The eclectic clientele is drawn from media whores, Japanese embassy staff, tourists, students and other randomly assorted locals. Tasty, quick, healthy, cheap and entertaining Ishin is an great choice for lunch in an area otherwise wanting for variety. The perfect way to refuel before an afternoon’s shopping in Mitte or exploring Unter den Linden’s cultural charms.
