Jamavar
Back in the day, diners keen on experiencing Jamavar’s elegant Indian cuisine would have to go to its restaurants in Bengaluru, Chennai, Goa, Mumbai or New Delhi. Happily, as of late 2016, that’s no longer the case; Jamavar is now a popular denizen of ritzy London neighbourhood, Mayfair. And it’s a match made in heaven.
The two dining rooms are sleek and atmospheric, with more than a few nods to the style of the Viceroy’s house in New Delhi in the decor. That means Lutyens-inspired furniture and Indian Ganjifa artwork, brass accents and dark wooden panelling. They even reproduce colours and patterns from Jamavar shawls in the restaurant’s interior design.
In the kitchen, meanwhile, the executive chef, Rohit Ghai – an alum of Trishna and Michelin-starred Gymkhana – is creating dishes that sing with spice and sensation. All while using locally-sourced ingredients, like Hampshire lamb and Suffolk corn-fed chicken. The menu ranges from small plates, like Crispy Guineafowl Malligai with raw mango pachadi, buttermilk and crispy leaves, to tandoor-grilled tikkas, chops and kebabs – with dishes like southern-spiced lobster nerulli and seasonal vegetable biryani in between. Indeed, at Jamavar, flavours from all over India are brought to bear and artfully blended in dishes that pack a serious flavour punch; you’ll want to arrive for a meal here hungry.
