Janes and Hooch
Although there’s now a sign on the door – making a night at Janes and Hooch in Sanlitun’s Factory District much easier to come by – there’s still enough of a speakeasy vibe to render this stylish bar atmospheric with just a hint of underground exclusivity. With exposed brick and chic cement interiors, and bowtie-bedecked mixologists, Janes and Hooch is definitely channeling Chicago circa the 1920s, but the bar, thankfully, doesn’t fall prey to the trap of style over substance.
The cocktails at Janes and Hooch are expertly crafted and the menu of seasonal tipples in particular are innovative and delicious. Martini lovers should sample the so-called Filthy Martini; with French vermouth, kalamata olives, and a citrus and thyme brine, it’s one of the dirtiest and best in the city. Meanwhile the small plates and bar nibbles like the “Rou Pan” – a curated charcuterie plate of mouthwatering meats like Wagyu beef and Dashi bacon – are the perfect accompaniment to a night of indulgent drinks and, hopefully, good company.
