Jean Lafitte Historical Park
The Jean Lafitte National Historical Park encompasses most of southern Louisiana and has several interpretive centres that provide walking tours and displays on the culture, nature, and the art of the region. At the French Quarter centre on Decatur Street, the highest point in the neighbourhood, you can enjoy free walking tours starting at 9:30am daily-come early to grab a limited ticket. Alternatively, catch a live performance by a jazz musician, a chef cooking local cuisine, or perhaps a woodworker building a Lafitte skiff. Another interpretive centre on the West Bank of the Mississippi near Lafitte features exhibits on swamps and the cypress lumber industry. The Chalmette Battlefield, where the 1815 Battle of New Orleans was fought, is also part of the park system.
