Believe it or not, karaoke has become quite the fashionable hobby in Kazakhstan and we wouldn’t be surprised if sometime soon there are as many karaoke bars as there are kalyan bars. Jelsomino is, without a doubt, the classiest place for a sing-along. Run by the same team behind Barhat and Kyoto Bar, Jelsomino exudes cool. Although this seemingly unnamed group appears to be taking over the city – a Jelsomino boutique hotel is to open up next door – each of its venues is individual and it’s a takeover that’s welcomed with open arms. Jelsomino’s ever-increasing popularity means booking a table is advisable, whether in the public bar downstairs or in a private VIP room upstairs. And you can forget notions of wailing and warbling on-stage; here, the quality of entertainment is pretty high and Kazakhstanis (on the whole) know how to belt out a tune. Just watch out for the somewhat tacky statues of jazz musicians.
