Hg2 : The Hedonist

Jen Cafe

Ramshackle little corner caff on the edge of Chinatown, that’s a good vantage point from which to watch the comings and goings around Gerrard Street. Open from noon to early evening it provides satisfying snacks of noodle soup, freshly made dumplings – steamed and griddled, and various barbecued treats in helpings of char sui, duck and crispy pork. Frequented by the odd tourist, that’s happened upon it en route to Leicester Square or Piccadilly Circus, and gaggles of giggling Chinese girls, who come as it’s one of the few place in London that serves a large selection of bubble drinks, from watermelon to milky Taiwanese green tea, iced and made with pearls of chewable tapioca, that are sucked up with wide straws and then gently gnawed. An acquired taste but worth a try especially as it’s unlicensed. Service is smiley but chaotic.
