Hg2 : The Hedonist

Joe Allen

It’s air-kissing luvvies a go-go at this Covent Garden thespian favourite since 1977. While it could be argued that some of the theatrical types who make up the clientele are prone to pretension, the same cannot be said of the easy-going US menu that always finds room for Caesar salad, pork chops and pecan pie – although not for the famous ‘secret’ burger. The à la carte prices aren’t for struggling actors but the weekday lunch and weekend brunch menus, the latter including two-courses, a glass of champagne, Bucks Fizz or Bloody Mary for £18.50, are infinitely better value, and a WiFi enabled breakfast is available Monday to Friday. The basement dining room is packed to the exposed bricks most nights and Jay Rayner, the Observer’s restaurant critic, who’s always wanted to be on stage, says, “Late at night it’s still the place.””
