Kasbah Bab Ourika
Kasbah Bab Ourika is located in the Ourika valley at the foot of the Atlas mountains, it’s the brainchild of Stpehen Skinner, British owner of the delightfully eccentric Riyad Edward. Having started out building himself a private retreat, Skinner found he couldn’t stop; before he knew it, he was the proud owner of a tasteful 15-room Kasbah complete with gardens, pool, excellent restaurant, panoramic views and more.
Built by Berber artisans from the surrounding villages, the Kasbah Bab Ourika is impressively eco-friendly. Constructed from pise (rammed earth) its underfloor heating is solar powered, there’s a renewable water system and even an innovative bio-digester that generates electricity and compost for the garden. Comfort levels are incredibly high.
Rooms are differently sized – some have baths, others have showers; the upper suites come with terraces – but are all kitted out with Berber rugs, black and white photos and antique chests. The pool is large and the restaurant serves fantastic food that blends traditional Moroccan with contemporary international. For the chilly evenings Kasbah Bab Ourika has a bar-lounge with a fireplace and plenty of books and games, and you can organize day trips to the Ourika Valley, Setti Fatma Water Falls and the Tamadant Valley or even try some skiing.
