Kensington Square Kitchen
Daytime-only licensed café from Leith’s lady cookery school graduate, overlooking a pleasant garden square behind Kensington High Street. A haven for hassled shoppers, it does a good line in seasonal soups, salads, small plates and more substantial meals, in the way of good quality burgers, pasta and pies – with freshly baked cakes for afters. The sort of place more common to Sydney or northern California, it’s open for breakfast from 9am and starts doing its laid-back brunch thing at midday, with a decent drinks list, staying open until 6pm. Aimed at the glamorous mums who drop their kids off at the nearby primary school, it’s prettily decorated, like a posh childless housewife’s parlour, scattered with glossy food porn publications. There are additional seats in the basement but on a sunny day you want to be sitting upstairs overlooking the square.
