Hg2 : The Hedonist

Khan Shatyr

Seeing as this is by far the coolest addition to the Astana skyline, you may want to hang around here for more than just the shopping. In fact, Khan Shatyr claims to offer a ‘new way of life’ to its visitors with experiences on offer far beyond material goods. A flick through our Snack section and you’ll see that there are some great places to sit down on the third and fourth floors, whether for a coffee, cocktail or even a bite to eat. In terms of the shopping, this is the best place for it in the city with most western high-street brands as well as some local ones. From Debenhams to Zara they’re all present and correct, and although their prices are a little higher here than they would be back home, they remain reasonable all the same. There are also some more upmarket boutiques, plenty of shoe stores and a few jewellery shops thrown in for good measure. Worth noting is Mondial (www.mondial.com. tr) for its fabulous furs, Colin’s for exclusive ski gear, Max Mara for leisurewear, and Takeshy Kurosawa for jazzy Italian designer jeans. The highlight for us, perhaps, is the beach. The tent’s top floor is dedicated exclusively to sand, and has been ingeniously designed (thank you, Norman Foster) to be hot in winter but not too hot in summer. With sand flown in from the Maldives and underfloor heating for a natural feeling underfoot, there is nothing quite like lying in the sun when it’s -30ºC outside or partying barefoot at one of its many events. Also up here is the Laeila spa, which is by far one of the best in town and includes a gym with a running track circling the entire inside edge of the tent. A vast cinema, monorail, waterpark ride and a gaming zone complete the list of entertainments to be had. And watch out for a bride and groom on the Drop Tower – a 38m high ride in the centre of the atrium.
