Hg2 : The Hedonist

When it comes to under-the-radar restaurants in Mumbai, Khyber takes the crown. This place, whilst well known to all taxi drivers in the city, does not display a sign out front, so if you’re on foot, ask folks to direct you as everyone knows it. Northern Indian food from the Punjab is the order of the day: think rich, delicious, breathe-in-for-weeks after fare.

Recommended dishes on the menu at Khyber include channa masala for veggies and kebabs and chicken biriyani for meat-eaters. There are some good Indian wines on offer, too, including the excellent Sula brand from nearby Nashik.

The waiters are primarily older gentlemen, many sporting waxed handlebar moustaches – it feels a bit like being served by your dad, but there’s something endearing about them, especially as they’re so attentive.

Book if you’re coming to Khyber in the evenings as it’s usually packed to the rafters with rich, hungry Indian families, curious travellers and expats. A little bit pricey perhaps, but the ambience, service and choice of dishes makes the extra cash seem more than worth it.
