Kiek in de Kok
This chunky military tower encapsulates everything you need to know about the city walls and their romantic-looking fortifications – actually fairly serious weapons of war until they became obsolete in the 19th century. Built in the 15th century and extended in the 17th, Kiek in de Kök has six storeys of gun positions and arrow-slit windows looking out over the town (hence the name, which means ‘peek in the kitchen’).

rnToday it is a museum, located conveniently underneath Toompea Hill – which it was originally designed to defend. Inside you will find a fascinating scatter-gun history of warfare and general life in old Estonia.
