Kirstenbosch Summer Concerts
Nothing better than a spot of live music in Cape Town to polish off the weekend, say the locals. Rather than letting the Sunday blues get to them, Capetonians inevitably wind down the day with another party – truly, in this town, the week can wait. And the most appealing place to bid the weekend goodbye is at this series of concerts, lined up throughout the main summer season and celebrating not only some excellent
rnbands-of-today, but also paying tribute to the setting sun and the great outdoors. The staging is ingenious, in fact, occupying a naturally inclined lawn at Kirstenbosch Gardens (see Culture), this open-air auditorium ensures fresh air, and a majestic backdrop that’s as thrilling (or more so) as the gigs on stage. You can arrive as early in the day as you want with a picnic basket and as much wine as you require (there are no bins in Kirstenbosch, so you’re responsible for taking away your own litter), although you can also purchase eats and drinks at one of the venues at the Gardens. The series of increasingly hip concerts includes such great local outfits as Freshly Ground, Goldfish, Fokofpolsiekar (translates as Fuck Off Police Car), and Dirty Skirts, all major bands that range in genre from danceable
rnelectronica (Goldfish) to intelligent rock (there’s poetry in the lyrics of Dirty Skirts).
