Hg2 : The Hedonist

Zürich’s most famous eatery is a tribute to the visionary
Zumsteg family, who took over an ailing brasserie in 1925 and turned it into a
sparkling melting pot for the worlds of art, fashion, business and high society.
Generous patrons to struggling artists during the war years and keen collectors
thereafter, the Zumsteg’s picked up paintings from a host of famous names,
including Chagall, Miró, Klee, Braque and Picasso – works that now hang throughout
the restaurant and bar.

A dramatic dining room, the feel is pure fin de siècle elegance, with high
ceilings, brasserie fittings and attentive, formally attired waitresses. Immensely
popular, it still draws in a cosmopolitan crown of Zürich’s smartest and the scene
is pure old school glamour. The menu, which doesn’t disappoint but isn’t a draw
in itself, focuses on classic French and Swiss dishes; blinis with smoked salmon, veal with rösti, chateaubriand and carré d’agneau provençale, accompanied
by an extensive wine list.
