Kubbeli Saloon Tea Lounge
Few hotels can boast the range and quality of roles in fiction that the Pera Palace has on its CV, popping up as it does in Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, Ian Fleming’s From Russia with Love and Alfred Hitchcock’s The Lady Vanishes. Even if you don’t opt to bed down here, there are still plenty of ways to savour Pera Palace’s literature-soaked ambience. Patisserie de Pera, the elegant and charming in-house patisserie, serves French pastries, macaroons and pots of coffee in grand hotel style. Alternatively, book a table in the Kubbeli Saloon for afternoon tea, where the lavish buffet is overflowing with cucumber and salmon sandwiches, berry tarts, chocolate cake and similar. If an evening aperitif appeals, the Orient Terrace Bar – with views over the Golden Horn – is ideal for a sundowner or an evening snack. The only blot on these particular landscapes is the number of tourists you’ll find here clutching, er… guidebooks, and spoiling the atmosphere (so hide the book and try not to look like a tourist. Elegant late 19th-century period dress should do it).
