La Fontaine
Tucked away beyond the cool, canalside cafés of Saint Martin, up an unremarkable street past the Hôpital Saint-Louis, this small bar is more reminiscent of an Edwardian pub than a Parisian joint. The tiny but airy room has large windows on two sides and a brass-topped bar.
For the past four years it has been run by two brothers of North African origin who have a penchant for young and experimental jazz. An intellectual-boho audience come for the performances, which kick off most nights from 9.30pm (except Sundays and throughout August); the musicians vary on a regularly, if not nightly, and entrance is free, although the younger brother walks around, hat in hand, at the end of the evening to collect ‘tips’ from appreciative patrons.
It’s also a good option for breakfast and lunch, with speciality couscous served up on Thursdays and Fridays. There are three different beers on tap and a short but comprehensive cocktail list. A place for jazz virgins and aficionados alike.
