La Fourmi

Scuffed ochre walls, industrial lamps, paintings by local artists – there’s not much pretention about La Fourmi, where thirtysomething indie connoisseurs congregate for cheap beer and chat.

It’s a big old former bistro with high ceilings, generous windows and a long zinc bar that yields stacks of flyers, in case you’re looking for a party; there are terrace tables, and some nice discreet nooks on the mezzanine level indoors. All resolutely untouristy, and authentically Parisian without being retro, unless you count the Bowie/Doors soundtrack.

It fills up with party people at night, popular as a pre-club pub; by day, it does sterling work as a place to sit and read Derrida and nurse a coffee, or to collapse for an hour, during a hard day of Montmartre sightseeing.
