Hg2 : The Hedonist

La Grande Epicerie de Paris

La Grande Epicerie de Paris is a temple to food. But not just any food – the products here are the best of the best. They’re high-end, exclusive, hard-to-find, and utterly covetable. Found in the 7th Arrondissement on the ground floor of the historic Paris institution that is Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche, this is a food hall of truly EPICurean proportions.

Food-lovers can stop by week-round to fill their baskets with fresh, quality produce or to pick up their daily baguette. And the croissants? Well, they are flaky, buttery perfection. But then, what would you expect from a bakery team headed up by the fantastically-named Meilleur Ouvrier de France (or, for those of us with less than stellar French: “Best Craftsman of France”). But that’s just the tasty tip of the iceberg… There are bottles of grassy green Italian olive oil that can set you back a pretty penny, bottles of wine from boutique French vineyards, toe-curlingly delicious cheese, and bottles and jars of everything the aspiring chef could hope to take home to their own kitchens.

All told, there are 30,000 products to lust after at La Grand Epicerie de Paris. It’s enough to drive a foodie mad. Speaking of: if shopping here gets to be too tempting (all those exotic, purse-maddening products, wrapped up and just out of reach of your tastebuds), you can give in and indulge at the in-house wine bar, Le Balthazar or the restaurant, La Table. A spur-of-the-moment meal is probably better than trying to eat the contents of your shopping basket on the sleek, sumptuous shop floor, after all.
