La Isla del Tesoro

One of a new generation of vegetarian restaurants in Madrid (they’ve been slow to catch on in this ham-loving city), La Isla del Tesoro serves healthy and tasty meals in a kitsch, grotto-style setting. La Isla del Tesoro translates as ‘The Treasure Island’, and so naturally the decoration adopts this theme. A fishing net hangs from the ceiling, adorned with fairy-lights, and a starfish hangs on the wall.

An imaginative set-lunch menu is based on a different national cuisine each day – perhaps Greek, Indian, Moroccan, African or Spanish. It’s great value and all dishes are designed to provide a complete and balanced meal. On the à la carte menu, the starters are almost the same price as main courses, but both are still reasonable.

There’s a menu in English and descriptions of some of the ingredients, for those who aren’t dedicated followers of all things veggie. Unlike most, it doesn’t close between lunch and dinner, so is popular for teas and snacks in the late afternoon.
