La Locanda

This little bambino, La Locanda, is owned and run by an undefeated Italian boxer and an ex-Italian paratrooper, and is hands down the friendliest of all the restaurants on South Beach, Miami. Francesco Cavalletti, who once had a promotional contract with Don King, and Massimo Fortunato, who used to jump out of aeroplanes over enemy territory, have created a charming trattoria which somehow seats 60 people. La Locanda has been squeezed in between Harrison’s Steak House and French bistro L’Entrecôte, and relies on using up every inch of its allocated pavement space. The menu is not particularly adventurous, but chef Roberto Lopez and his assistant make good use of the minuscule kitchen to produce some fabulous pasta and seafood dishes that have locals coming back for more. La Locanda – which means ‘inn’ in Italian – is also moderately priced, so the SoBe Ferrari crowd tend to turn their noses up at it. But for those in the know who go early to grab the tables outside, La Locanda is a superb dinner venue.
