La Trattoria Di Giancarlo

Run by two local brothers, La Trattoria de Giancarlo is an Italian restaurant in Marrakech situated in the center of Gueliz in a Spanish-style 1920’s villa packed with furnishings by Italian artisans. This cultural confusion continues successfully with the food — officially Italian, but more Mediterranean with its French and Moroccan flare. Don’t expect the typical Italian dish of sliced fillet topped with shaved parmesan when ordering the “Médaillon de Bouf au Parmesan” — it’s a nearly raw chunk of beef wrapped up like a cadeau in toasted parmesan. The intriguing spice from the calamari appetiser comes from Atlas Mountain herbs, and you just can’t go wrong with the rich molten chocolate cake partially submerged by a lake of vanilla crème. For Arabian Nights-style romance, reserve poolside: heat lamps make this possible even during winter months. Inside, a large steel chandelier hangs from a domed ceiling casting dim light on plush velvet seating and an eclectic mix of oil paintings. Trattoria de Giancarlo is also one of the few restaurants in Marakesh where you don’t have to yell at your date over bursts of loud traditional music. Take a before or after dinner drink under the stars on the entry veranda, breathing in the scent of roses and hibiscus, or by the fire in the salon, furnished with Art Deco pieces including hammered silver tables.
