La Trucha

For authentic Andalusian tapas in Madrid, try this well-known rustic restaurant La Trucha, which is right next door to Viva Madrid. Plates of all shapes and sizes hang from its whitewashed walls, alongside bunches of garlic and onions, while outside there’s a tiny pavement terrace, usually reserved for people eating full meals rather than tapas.

The name refers to the fresh trout, which is the speciality of the house, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try the pescaito frito (fried fish) or berenjena frito (fried aubergines). Waiters are of the more mature kind and there seem to be dozens of them, all intent on providing top service to the mix of tourists and wealthy (sometimes celebrity) locals who come here.
