L’Abyssin
L’Abyssin is decidedly the hipper of the two restaurants that belong to the majestic Palais Rhoul in Marrakech. In fact, the funky design and cooler-than-cool allure couldn’t make more of a contrast with the formal elegance of the main hotel. Set in a gorgeous garden area (complete with verbose frogs), it really is nothing more than a series of white tents arranged in a square around a minimal courtyard. The milky décor, complete with white curtains flapping in the breeze, large, comfy sofas (also white) and low tables create a superb ‘lounge’ ambience. The tents are exposed to the elements on warm summer days and nights, and buttoned up tight with transparent sheets when it’s colder. The menu isn’t hugely extensive but it is interesting and the chefs usually – but not always – create meals that are above average. It’s not as expensive as it could be, although anyone staying in the Medina will be adding a 200dh return taxi ride to the bill. A good option might be to lunch here and also use the fabulous Palais Rhoul spa. Bookings for both are recommended.
