L’Assignat
The jukebox promises, without a shred of irony, the Dallas theme, ‘The Final Countdown’ by Europe, Boney M and Serge Gainsbourg – what more could you need? Well, inexpensive coffee, table football, curmudgeonly family owners (secretly really nice, you can tell) and good plain food, such as sausage and lentils, burgers or steak tartare are what you get.
The name is a reference to a sort of bond issued during the French Revolution, when the government went bankrupt, and the fag-ash-Lil walls are decorated with images of coins and bank notes; the Musée de la Monnaie de Paris, i.e. the city mint, is opposite.
It’s a great place to come for a quiet citron pressé and a slice of real old Paris, in the company of students from the nearby Ecole des Beaux-Arts.
