Le Albert 1er
Places to stay in Chamonix don’t all provide the whole package, or come wrapped up so prettily. Built 100 years ago, this fabulous four-star hotel mixes chic contemporary decor with traditional mountain folk art.
It’s an interesting combination, to say the least, but one that works oh-so well. There are 21 rooms in the main building, all with views over the Mont Blanc mountain range or meticulously manicured gardens; meanwhile, there are 12 rooms available in a neighbouring farm, an old wooden cottage at the edge of the park and a detached chalet that sleeps six.
As if such awe-inspiring accommodation wasn’t enough, Le Albert 1 er also boasts a two Michelin-starred restaurant that serves up fanciful French cuisine with flare; dishes include duck liver, monkfish, wood pigeon, venison, trout and lobster, with prices that start at €39 for lunch and €68 for dinner. There is also the sophisticated Quartz Bar, which offers cool cocktails and luxurious liqueurs against a backdrop of live jazz.
Wrapping things up nicely are two pools – both indoor and outdoor (for the brave) – and a fully-equipped spa, complete with Jacuzzi, steam room and a range of treatments that span hot stone therapies, massages, facials and detox wraps.
