Hg2 : The Hedonist

Le Meurice

Lord, isn’t Paris full of amazing, expensive restaurants? Can there be a top of the tops? We couldn’t eat at all of them – not even in the name of hedonism – but we did ask many Parisian restaurateurs and rich foodies where to go in order to spend hundreds of euros and eat like a Holy Roman Emperor, and here’s where we ended up. Yannick Alléno’s restaurant at Le Meurice is one of some dozen establishments in Paris to carry three Michelin stars; what makes it extra-special is the most beautiful dining room in Paris, all silvery light, fine-veined marble and angels on the ceiling. The food is opulent but not frivolous: Alléno’s style is subtle, aromatic and exact. Each dish is ceremoniously introduced by a waiter of the correct rank for that particular course. A recent tasting menu featured crab meat in squid cannelloni served with pink grapefruit and seaweed chutney and almond ice-cream; and larded fillet of beef marinated with seaweed jam. As one of our correspondents declares: ‘It always delivers.’
