Le Pain Quotidien

It’s likely that you have been to a ‘Le Pain’ before, but lovers of pastries will be pleased to discover that now the Beligian brand has travelled further afield to Mumbai and Colaba is home to branch number 151. In English the name means ‘daily bread’ and this sums up the philosophy somewhat, which is to tempt passers-by to drop in, and then, if they’re anything like us, to keep coming back daily.

Le Pain Quotidien uses no additives, preservatives, or improvers during the bread making process, so it’s reassuringly healthy and delicious. It’s not all about bread though, come for juices, wines, tasty tarts and granolas too. The cool north-European décor, the smart staff, and the long opening hours all appeal to Mumbai’s fans of coffee culture.
The communal table, naturally made from reclaimed wood, features here as in all branches, and encourages diners to chat – the philosophy being that we’re a community even if it’s a big scary city beyond the windows. You can’t blame people for trying.
