Le Trou au Mur
Change is rarely something that comes to the Marrakech food scene. While this city is home to dozens of great restaurants, the vast majority have been around for decades and tend to serve similar versions of the same classic tagines and Moroccan salads. And while there will always be a place for this kind of unfussy food, occasionally one craves something just a little more adventurous.
Opened by the team behind Riad Farnatchi—located just over the road—Le Trou au Mur specialises in authentic Moroccan food and takes its inspiration from traditional home cooking. This is the place to come if you want to discover unusual recipes that have been largely lost to modern life, from tihane (offal stuffed with spiced kefta and served with a silky tahini sauce) to tripe. Of course, there’s also a range of excellent international dishes for those looking for some home comforts, but it would be a shame to come here and miss their signature lamb meshoui, cooked in a traditional clay oven until falling apart and served with a choice of classic sauces.
The emphasis on local also extends to the wine list, with a superb selection of Moroccan wine to choose from and knowledgeable staff to guide you to the best bottles. In the summer months, the rooftop terrace is a suitably romantic setting, while in cooler weather the dining room on the first floor provides its own diversions. Decorated in a bright black and white colour palette with splashes of vibrant green and modern accents mixed with Moroccan furnishings, screen printed photographs and colourful oil paintings, the décor here will hold your attention right up until the moment the food arrives.
