Les Negoçiants

One of the perennially popular cafe’s in Marrakech despite the burning question raised by Café les Negoçiants, an attractive and cosmopolitan café in the centre of Gueliz, is this: why would you bother spearing a toastie with a cocktail stick when all there is to keep inside is a slice of processed cheese? Such burning issues are unlikely ever to be addressed, but it doesn’t really matter because the reason to come here is not the food (which is definitely more on the ‘miss’ side of ‘hit and miss’) nor the service (laconic at best) – but simply to people watch. Café les Negoçiants is very popular with locals and tourists alike for this reason, and the tables out front in warm weather are generally packed with a mix of Moroccans and tourists watching the action on the perpetually busy Abdel Moumen. The establishment recently swapped its famous green and white awning for a new red and brown design but don’t be fooled: the soul of the place is essentially the same.
