Liquorice & Lime
Cape Town cafes with a view? Yesplease. Tiny, tranquil, and with an astonishing vista on Table Mountain, this is located at the top-end of Kloof Street, right next door to the over-the-top, rambunctious Bombay Bicycle Club (incidentally, an interesting choice for a late night drink, once the dinner crowd has subsided, Tel: 021 423 6805). A green and black colour scheme, chequered flooring, soft banquets, a solitary, slow-turning ceiling fan, and vintage wall lights all signal the owner’s obsession with Deco while simple, stylish meals will stave off a hunger, subdue a hang- over, or tide you over between meals. With just a handful of tables, a Sade (or similar) soundtrack, piles of magazines, and a small, curious selection of artisanal food products, this is a gentle escape from the world outside; all-day breakfasts, flame-grilled burgers (patties are made right here) and home-made pies are all good. While waiting for your meal (note that no alcohol is served), browse the shelves for tasty take-home treats from the Cook Sisters – the cranberry and peanut brittle is a winner.
