Hg2 : The Hedonist

Loading Bay Cafe

Not many Cape Town diners come with such bewitching owners. Dangling above this light-filled, indoor-outdoor, post-industrial rehabilitated warehouse space, the large black and yellow half-spherical light fittings are almost as striking as the long-eyelashed owner, a handsome 20-something entrepreneur. Selling beautiful imported clothing, excellent coffee, and the best burgers in town, Jon-Paul Bolus is already a small-time hero, having dreamt up De Waterkant’s ultimate daytime schmoozing venue, and been named South Africa’s best-dressed man by GQ magazine. Street-cred and good looks aside, he has a take-charge approach to reinvigorating the inner city and his enthusiasm is evident in the way Loading Bay looks and feels like a million bucks, luring citywise regulars to this edge of Green Point’s cobble-stone precinct. Stop by for a light meal, always prepared from fresh, organic, personally-sourced ingredients; the selection is a clever mix of wholesome breakfasts, perfect afternoon fillers, and early evening platters and Lebanese mezze. Thursdays’ nights are a bit of fun, when burgers are served along with truffle-salted fries. There’s a good range of hand-crafted produce, from coffee to beer, and plans to bring a low-key farmer’s market of sorts to the derelict space across the road.
