You can’t help but think when Mario Batali dreams up each one of his empire of eateries that it all comes from one simple thought from his orange be-cloggedness: “Where would I like to eat tonight?”

Gentle, lovely Lupa is the kind of easy-going, neighborhood spot that Italians take for granted across the Atlantic. Hunks of focaccia, outstanding salumi, and the freshest of fresh pastas make this little West Village osteria a winner with chefs like Dan Barber when he wants to eat on his own “the bar at Lupa is heaven”, food writer Raquel Pelzel “the bar at Lupa – bustling and always entertaining; plus, way easier to catch a spot for one than for two”.

Our favorite spot? The corralled-in sidewalk tables on a lovely day or night with, for, (chef Julian Alonzo wisely advises), “the best buccatini pasta there is”.
