Madewood Plantations
Madewood Plantation is a historic site with a difference. The big plantations in Louisiana were built as homes. People lived there. They slept in the canopy beds and ate their meals in the splendid dining rooms. These days, though, most of the plantations open to the public are more like museums. Not Madewood. The Greek-revival manor that Colonel Thomas Pugh build in 1848 is now a bed and breakfast. Guests gather with a glass of wine in the library, dine on local Louisiana classics, and stroll the grounds of what was once part of a 10,000-acre sugar plantation. Bask in the splendor of the 19th century without sacrificing the conveniences of the 21st, such as air conditioning and Internet.
