Mado Ice Cream
With outlets all over the city, Mado is Istanbul’s (and Turkey’s) favourite ice-cream brand and parlour chain. Its gloopy, almost chewy wares are mixed up the traditional Turkish way, using goat’s milk, sugar and salep, a powder made from ground wild orchid tubers. The latter allegedly possesses aphrodisiacal powers, which perhaps adds to the enormous popularity of Turkish ice-cream. There is an array of more than 80 flavours on offer, including date, pomegranate, fig, carrot, pumpkin and fabulously rich dark chocolate.
