Maison MK
Designed by fashion photographers Paul and Aoibheann Hopkins, Maison MK is a boutique hotel but set as one of the riads in Marrakech. Given the designers’ backgrounds, lighting at Maison MK is appropriately theatrical and dim – dozens of integrated components and custom fixtures complement the quirky curvaceous design and tadelakt walls. The five spacious rooms and one suite are rich with Moroccan textiles, while deep tubs and window seats strongly support escapism. The place is more design-y kitsch than charming, but rooms stocked with pre-loaded iPods, cell phones programmed with essential numbers, and Veuve Clicquot champagne and chocolate stashed in the mini bar can’t be sniffed at. Ground floor facilities encompass a curved plunge pool, cigar lounge (with a smoking camel wall fixture), and a small restaurant with a “romantic” room for private bookings. You’ll also find a tiny but serviceable fitness room with a weight machine and a cinema room with Xbox, DVD player, and 8-foot wide flat screen TV. Avoid the small hamman and massage room — you’ll get more for your money elsewhere. The split-level roof – used by Jamie Oliver for filming his “Jamie Does…Marrakesh” TV programme – is ideal for soaking up the sun or sipping a cocktail under the stars.
