Mamie Gateaux
Perfectly adorable, from the tiny madeleine that comes with your tea (try the bourbon vanilla) to the wooden school furniture, this dear little establishment is part of a mini Mamie Gateaux empire, starting with the tearoom, and continuing next door to a boutique, rather reminiscent of east London’s Labour & Wait, and a brocante selling nostalgic school-related collectibles. The owners, a French/Japanese couple, have recreated a vanishing grandmère style of Frenchness to very comforting effect. The tarts, soups, salads and cakes are all home-made, and the menu is printed on a leaf of paper designed to look as though it’s pulled from an exercise book. You can buy teas and jams to take home, and the prices in the brocante are nice and old-school, too.
