Behind a rusted iron façade, MAO Livehouse is a popular venue for concerts and the occasional theatre production in the heart of the Gulou hipster ‘hood. Nurturing homegrown rockers, the venue draws a loyal and varied crowd. The stage is a traditional black box theatre with three floors of standing room and a terrific sound system. If you’re into the punk music scene at home then you should check out gigs by Beijing bands such as Demerit and Brain Failure. A recent indie rock festival brought together the capital’s best alternative bands, such as rock poetess Li Mo, the morbidly dressed Mythomania and Ci Qin, a local folk rock group. There is also a small bar done all in burnt reds and graffiti serving moderately priced drinks. Ticket prices are usually RMB 30-RMB 60 and shows start around 8.30pm-9pm.
