The Melkweg (milky way) remains probably the city’s best-known venue, both for visiting bands and for clubbing. The main hall can host around 2,000 punters, and attracts bands from across the world. The second room is a tad smaller, but still gets good acts. If there are no gigs on, the two rooms each host club nights (these also usually run after bands finish, with music of the ilk of the live act that’s gone before). It’s good value, typically about ?8 entry on a regular night, unpretentious and sweaty. Themed nights range from Latin to hip hop to indie to techno, and you’ll often have two very different sounds in the two rooms, meaning you can swerve from gangster rap to jangly guitar tunes as the mood takes you. This also makes for some intriguing comings together in the coat queue, the two diverse crowds making for a quaint sight. There’s also a cinema and art gallery.
