Hg2 : The Hedonist

Mercado de Santa Clara

Mercado de Santa Clara is part of the market hall that plays centre stage to the Feira da Ladra flea market on Tuesdays and Sundays, but there is nothing second-rate about this loft space restaurant. In stark contrast to the busy early morning cafés, the pace is more metered and subdued. Ceilings are low and the room could be stifling on a hot day, but stunning views of the neighbouring Panteão Nacional de Santa Engrácia are well worth a lunchtime visit. Slightly worn furnishings and aged tile flooring smack of a much-loved premises where little alteration has been made over the years.
rnFood is simple, but abundant in flavour and way beyond the standards of usual home cooking. Gourmet chef Carlos Braz Lopes also runs culinary courses in his ‘Cozinhomania’ cooks’ shop on the other side of the city. The restaurant is a popular choice for Sunday lunch, where a finely attired elderly crowd queue to pile their plates with a traditional Portugese feijoada buffet. As close as it gets to Yorkshire pudding and roast potatoes.
