Located down an alley off Sanlitun Bar Street, Middle 8th specializes in Yunnan cuisine that keeps both locals and expats coming back. Although Middle 8th is not a high-end restaurant per se, the ivory walls are dotted with elegant flower-filled niches that contrast nicely with lively red sofa seating. Bordering Vietnam, Laos and Burma, Yunan province is home to 32 of China’s 56 minorities so its cuisine is unsurprisingly rich and diverse. The head chef learned authentic dishes from a peasant family like guòqiáomixiàn (Across the bridge” rice noodles) and then translated it for northern palates. The soup for this dish takes eight hours to make with its twenty ingredients and uses only three-year-old chicken. For the adventurous at heart begin your meal with the deep-fried bamboo worms. Other gastronomic highlights include bass with lemon chicken soup and pineapple rice served in a hollowed out pineapple. Round off your meal with Yunnan’s strong Pu’er tea – a green tea aged for five years.”
