Mississippi River Ferry
In On the Road, Jack Kerouac took the Mississippi River Ferry to visit writer William S. Burroughs, who lived across the river from the French Quarter. The ferry boards at Canal Street and lands at Algiers Point. The neighbourhood, New Orleans’ second oldest after the French Quarter, has Victorian cottages, bars with music, and a historic courthouse. The trip gives you a chance to see the busy port in action, where tankers and tugboats navigate the incredibly swift current. Ride the ferry just for view of the water, or stop for a beer in a tavern near the landing.
